Theatre; Just Because announces new season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 2018-08-09

Local independent theatre company Theatre; Just Because has announced their 2018-19 season! It promises to bring artistic development opportunities, excitement, new collaborations, and did we mention pirates?

During an Artist’s Talk at McMurray Experience, Theatre; Just Because Artistic Director Justin Shaw introduced their diverse programming and productions. Encouraging local artists to develop their craft and take ownership of their work, the season includes several explorative components, including the Youth Play Production High School Horror Story, during which the participating teens write the story themselves together with the director, and an original show written for the annual Waypoints dinner theatre fundraiser.

“We’re very pleased to once again produce one of the region’s must-attend events, the annual dinner theatre, in partnership with Waypoints! It is incredibly important to us that theatre can be used to meaningfully engage the community, so to partner with Waypoints again to support the vital work they do while developing local theatre artists is fantastic. We can’t wait to bring another original dinner theatre to life!” says director Diana Moser.

The ongoing New Play Development Series will continue to nurture local playwrights who are looking for feedback on their work, as well as resources and best practices. One of the scripts, written by local first-time playwright Mike Jones, will be workshopped during the Alberta Culture Days in September. Open and free to the public, this event hopes to further inspire participants to put their pens to paper.

“Many of us believe that creativity has an age-limit, and hesitate to try new things as adults. With the New Play Development Series and the ABCD workshop, we hope to encourage local playwrights to produce their own work, and help them hone their skills. It ties in to the ADFA One Act Theatre Festival, where we hope to showcase one of these original locally produced plays” says program lead Hanna Fridhed.

Last, but definitely not least, Theatre; Just Because is partnering with Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre to bring back Stage 2, by producing the ever-fascinating Shakespeare classic Macbeth!

“This production supports our mission of empowering artists to take ownership of their craft because of the level of encryption required to bring the text to life. The act of deciphering the intention and action embedded in the Bard’s text must be supported by performance – a process by which that can be practiced in all text. That is why Shakespeare’s work, from an educational perspective, has stood the test of time” says director Justin Shaw.
